Fort Portal City, nestled in the heart of Uganda’s scenic Western Region, is undergoing a remarkable transformation.
The Mountain Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has joined hands with the Tooro Kingdom in a vibrant campaign to clean up the city, fostering environmental conservation, civic pride, and tourism.
This dynamic partnership is not only revitalizing the city’s streets but also strengthening community bonds and showcasing Fort Portal’s potential as a premier tourist destination.
The initiative, launched with enthusiasm and shared purpose, brings together soldiers, local leaders, and residents in a collective effort to enhance the city’s cleanliness and beauty.
Fort Portal, known for its lush landscapes, crater lakes, and proximity to the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, is a gem of Uganda’s tourism circuit.
By ensuring its streets and public spaces are pristine, the campaign aims to elevate the city’s appeal to both domestic and international visitors.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Infantry Division, stationed in the region, has brought its discipline and organizational prowess to the effort.
Soldiers have been actively involved in clearing litter, planting trees, and maintaining public spaces, demonstrating their commitment to serving the community beyond their traditional roles.
Their participation reflects a deep sense of responsibility to protect the environment and contribute to the well-being of the region they call home.
The Tooro Kingdom, under the leadership of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has been a driving force in mobilizing community participation.
The kingdom’s cultural influence has inspired residents to take pride in their city and embrace their role as stewards of the environment.
Local leaders have organized community groups to work alongside the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), fostering a spirit of unity and shared purpose.
This collaboration highlights the power of combining cultural heritage with modern civic initiatives to create lasting change.
Environmental conservation is at the heart of the campaign. Fort Portal’s natural beauty, from its rolling hills to its vibrant ecosystems, is a cornerstone of its identity.
The clean-up efforts focus on preserving green spaces, protecting water sources, and promoting sustainable practices.
Tree-planting drives, led by both the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Tooro Kingdom, aim to combat deforestation and enhance the city’s greenery, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
The campaign also emphasizes civic responsibility, encouraging residents to take an active role in maintaining their city.
Community engagement activities, such as educational workshops and clean-up competitions, have sparked enthusiasm among young people and families.
These initiatives are cultivating a culture of accountability, where every citizen feels empowered to contribute to a cleaner and more vibrant Fort Portal.
Tourism, a vital pillar of Fort Portal’s economy, stands to benefit significantly from this initiative. A cleaner, more attractive city is poised to draw more visitors to its cultural landmarks, such as the Tooro Kingdom Palace, and natural wonders, including Kibale National Park and the Amabere Caves.
By showcasing Fort Portal as a model of cleanliness and community pride, the campaign is positioning the city as a must-visit destination in Uganda.
The partnership between the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Infantry Division and the Tooro Kingdom is a testament to the power of collaboration in achieving shared goals.
Their combined efforts are not only transforming Fort Portal’s physical landscape but also inspiring a renewed sense of community spirit.
As the campaign continues, it serves as a shining example of how unity, dedication, and a shared vision can create a brighter, greener, and more prosperous future for all.
Fort Portal City is on the rise, and with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Tooro Kingdom leading the way, its streets are cleaner, its spirit is stronger, and its future is more promising than ever.
About Tooro Kingdom
The Tooro Kingdom, one of Uganda’s four traditional kingdoms, traces its origins to the 16th-century Bito dynasty, founded by Prince Olimi Kaboyo Kasunsunkwanzi.
Abolished in 1967 but restored in 1993, Tooro Kingdom is led by His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV (the reigning Omukama of Tooro), crowned at age three in 1995 after his father’s death.
Born April 16, 1992, to King Patrick Kaboyo III and Queen Best Kemigisa, Rukidi IV of Tooro, now 33, symbolizes cultural resilience.
As Omukama (King or traditional ruler in Uganda), King Oyo’s role focuses on heritage, with the 2025 Hima Open (July 10-12) honoring his 30th coronation anniversary.
