UWA takes over security of rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Uganda Wildlife Authority the Ugandan government conservation agency has beefed up the security of the rhinos at Ziwa Sanctuary in Nakasongola district, 176 kms North of Kampala City, Uganda capital, to ensure the safety of the rhinos at the sanctuary is not compromised.

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch was established in 2005 as a protected area to reintroduce the southern white rhinos to Uganda that had become extinct in 1983 due to the civil war.

According to the media release from the state-run conservation and tourism agency, this development follows misunderstandings between Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranches (ZRWR), the owners of the 16,000 acre land where the rhinos breeding programmes takes place, and Rhino Fund Uganda (RFU), an NGO that has been managing the rhinos.

The misunderstandings have necessitated Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to deploy appropriately to secure the rhinos until the differences between Ziwa Ranches and Rhino Fund Uganda are resolved.

The Uganda Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) working with Uganda Wildlife Authority continue to engage the two parties to find an amicable solution.

The deployment is in line with Uganda Wildlife Authority’s mandate of protecting wildlife resources in Uganda as per the Uganda Wildlife Act 2019.

Uganda Wildlife Authority is not party to the conflicts between Ziwa Ranches and Rhino Fund Uganda and we reiterate our impartiality in the matter while stressing our mandate as an institution established to protect Uganda’s wildlife heritage.

It is our hope that the misunderstandings between Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranches and Rhino Fund Uganda will be resolved soon so that the operations at the sanctuary return to normal.

In the medium and long term, the rhinos will be introduced to Uganda Wildlife Authority managed protected areas.

Plans are already underway towards achieving this, with Uganda Wildlife Authority having completed a feasibility study to identify the most suitable locations for the introduction of rhinos and the conditions that need to be met to do so.
