Wildlife Conservation News: The Wildlife Ranger Challenge – Fundraising for Tusk Trust

Uganda Conservation Foundation (UCF) which support the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to recover and manage protected areas, promoting regional recovery and reducing poaching and wildlife crime in Uganda, shared this message on its Instagram Page Recently

We are incredibly proud of our three Wildlife Ranger Challenge teams for completing the 21km run with 22kg on their backs.

All of the runners finished having dodged the lions and elephants – but we all got caught by the huge storm! Only Michael Keigwin seemed happy with the rain as he jumped into every puddle he could find!

Team Murchison Falls won our race, with Queen Elizabeth National Park close behind. The Dream Team came an extremely close 1 hour behind Queen Elizabeth (QE).

We were delighted that our US Military ranger training team also ran from their hot and dusty Djibouti base – great solidarity, thank you all.

We must extend our sincere thanks to #tusktrust, the #scheinbergrelieffund and all who helped with and participated in the runs across over 100 African protected areas.

Huge thanks to Para Safari lodge in Murchison Falls National Park and Marasa Africa for hosting us all and providing a welcome breakfast to all of the teams, guests and organisers on finishing, as well as a boat ride for everyone and a delicious bbq in the evening.

Behind the scenes were the incredible Sherry and Jeremy McKelvie, Mike Nicholls and Marcus Warre. Without you all we would have struggled to have had such a successful event. Gold stars to you all!

Due to the Wildlife Ranger Challenge fund over $45,000 has already been put into critical park operations in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks.

If you have not donated – please do – funds are matched!

About the Wildlife Ranger Challenge:

COVID-19 has brought tourism revenue to a halt across Africa, threatening the important work and livelihoods of the rangers who protect iconic African wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, lions, and more. Ranger teams are now uniting around the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a running race with one goal: to raise money to support thousands of their fellow rangers. Now is the time to go the extra mile—it’s time to race to support our rangers. Every dollar donated will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your generous contribution.

Your donation will help 130 rangers and an estimated 1300 livelihoods in and around Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.

The role of rangers:

Rangers are under severe pressure at Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s second largest wildlife conservation area, preventing poaching, mitigating wildlife conflict and reacting to poisoning—all during an anthrax outbreak.

Effects of the pandemic:

The pandemic has been devastating for the area, especially combined with the impact of an anthrax outbreak.
