Uganda: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Welcomes a Newly Born Calf

During the mid-morning of Thursday 6th February , a new life was  joyfully welcomed at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary as Kuc, the beloved female southern white rhino, gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

This achievement marks a major milestone in the rhino conservation efforts at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) a state-run agency that manages parks and sanctuaries in Uganda including the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, broke the news on their “X” handle when they received confirmation from the ranger team assigned to look after Kuc, that she had given birth during the mid-morning.

Ziwa came into being through the generous donation of land use rights by Capt. Joe Roy and was put together by the Rhino Fund Uganda, which then raised nearly a million US Dollars in funding to put up a secure electric fence and rehabilitate the former ranch head quarters, after Capt. Roy had moved over 2.000 cattle to his neighboring second ranch.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a collaboration between Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The sanctuary’s goal is to eventually reintroduce rhinos to Murchison Falls National Park.

Ziwa now has 42 rhinos to show for visitors. Southern White Rhino population grew from 8 individuals in 2006. As of February 2025, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda has 42 rhinos. The sanctuary is home to the only remaining southern white rhinos in the wild in Uganda.

Again, congratulations to rhino conservation partners in Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and its dedicated staff at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, and watch this space to learn if we have another girl or boy rhino.
