5-Day Mgahinga Gorilla, Golden Monkey & Culture Safari Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala / Entebbe - Kisoro - Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe. Travel southwest through Uganda's beautiful countryside while watching the landscape gradually transform into the spectacular rolling hills of Kigezi, famously known as the "Switzerland of Africa."

Along the journey, stop at the Uganda Equator for memorable photographs and optional shopping before continuing toward Kisoro.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon where you'll relax while enjoying magnificent views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking or Golden Monkey Tracking

Following an early breakfast, transfer to the Ntebeko Visitor Centre for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

You can choose between two exceptional wildlife experiences.

Option A: Gorilla Trekking

Embark on an unforgettable trek through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes in search of the famous Nyakagezi Gorilla Family.

Once located, spend one magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Option B: Golden Monkey Tracking

Track the endangered Golden Monkeys as they leap gracefully through the bamboo forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

After your adventure, return to your lodge for relaxation beside the fireplace while admiring the stunning Virunga mountain range.

Day 3: Batwa Cultural Trail Experience

Today offers one of Uganda's richest cultural experiences.

Join experienced Batwa guides for an interactive walk through the forest while learning about the traditional lifestyle of Uganda's indigenous forest people.

Day 4: Optional Virunga Volcano Hiking Adventure

Adventure seekers may choose one of three spectacular volcano hikes;

Mount Sabinyo

• Stand simultaneously in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the summit.

Mount Gahinga

• A moderate hike through bamboo forests leading to a beautiful crater swamp.

Mount Muhavura

• The highest and most challenging climb offering panoramic views across Uganda, Rwanda and the Virunga Volcanoes.

Guests preferring a more relaxed day may enjoy leisure time at the lodge or optional community visits.

Day 5: Lake Bunyonyi - Kampala / Entebbe

After breakfast, depart Mgahinga and travel toward the picturesque Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa's most beautiful freshwater lakes.

Enjoy a traditional lunch overlooking its famous 29 islands while taking in breathtaking scenery.

Continue toward Kampala with optional stopovers in Mbarara and at the Equator before arriving in the evening.

For guests extending their safari, optional transfers to Lake Mburo National Park or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be arranged.

Booking Policy

• A 30% deposit confirms your reservation.
• Gorilla permits are secured only after payment is received.
• Book early, especially during the peak seasons (June–September and December–February).
• Final balance is due 45 days before arrival.

Additional Information

• Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15 years.
• Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness.
• Carry waterproof hiking boots and rain gear.
• Hiring a porter is highly recommended during gorilla trekking.
• Volcano hiking permits are booked separately.
• Birdwatchers should carry binoculars and telephoto lenses.

Cancellation Policy

• More than 60 days before arrival: Refund less banking and permit charges.
• 31-60 days: 75% refund excluding permits.
• 15-30 days: 50% refund excluding permits.
• Less than 15 days: No refund.
• Gorilla permits follow Uganda Wildlife Authority cancellation policies.
