3 Days Birdwatching Tour from Echuya Forest to Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda
This 3 Days Birdwatching Tour from Echuya Forest to Lake Mburo National Park takes you through three of Uganda’s most rewarding birding destinations.
From the rare montane habitats of Echuya Forest Reserve and the scenic trails of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda's smallest national park, a compact yet incredibly biodiverse gem covering just 33.7 km² in the southwestern corner of the country, in Kisoro District) to the savannah ecosystem of Lake Mburo National Park, this tour offers exceptional bird diversity within a compact and well-planned itinerary.
Echuya Forest Reserve, located between Kisoro and Kabale districts, is one of Uganda’s most important bird habitats in the Albertine Rift.
Echuya Forest (formally Echuya Central Forest Reserve, and recently elevated to Echuya National Park status as of late 2025) is a stunning, lesser-visited montane rainforest gem in southwestern Uganda's Albertine Rift Valley.
Covering about 3,400 hectares (34 km²), this forest straddles the districts of Kisoro (Bufumbira County) and Rubanda (formerly part of Kabale), lying between Lake Bunyonyi to the north and the border with Rwanda to the south.
At elevations around 2,000 to 2,300 m, Echuya forest is a misty, bamboo-dominated highland forest with cooler temperatures and a prehistoric vibe, perfect for those seeking off-the-beaten-path biodiversity away from the crowds of Bwindi or Mgahinga.
The forest’s unique bamboo and montane ecosystems support numerous endemic and rare species.
Combined with the papyrus swamps and savannah woodlands of Lake Mburo National Park, this safari provides a rich blend of forest, wetland, and savannah birding experiences.
Guided by knowledgeable local birding experts, you will explore prime bird habitats while enjoying comfortable accommodation and scenic drives across southwestern Uganda.
