UWA Debunks False Closure Claims of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has taken a stand to protect the reputation of one of Uganda’s most cherished conservation sites, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, by addressing a misleading press release that falsely claimed the sanctuary had closed its doors to the public.

On June 26th, 2025, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) released an official statement to clarify that Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located in Nakasongola District, remains fully operational, welcoming visitors and continuing its vital work in rhino conservation.

A fabricated press release recently surfaced on social media, wrongly stating that Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, home to Uganda’s only wild rhinos, had shut down.

The statement, designed to appear official, sparked concern among tourists, conservationists, and local communities who value the sanctuary’s role in wildlife protection and tourism.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) promptly responded to set the record straight. “The Uganda Wildlife Authority wishes to inform the public that the press release circulating about the closure of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is fake and should be disregarded,” said Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) spokesperson Bashir Hangi. “The sanctuary is open, and all tourism activities are proceeding as normal.”

The wildlife authority encouraged everyone to rely on its official communication channels, such as its website and verified social media accounts, for accurate updates. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) emphasized its commitment to transparency and ensuring that visitors and stakeholders have access to reliable information about Ziwa’s operations.

Located 176 kilometers north of Kampala along the Kampala-Gulu highway, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a cornerstone of Uganda’s efforts to restore its rhino population.

Established in 2005 through a partnership between Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the sanctuary began with six southern white rhinos and has since grown to house 42 rhinos, a remarkable achievement in global conservation.

Visitors to Ziwa can experience the thrill of tracking these gentle giants on foot, guided by expert rangers who bring them within 6 to 7 meters of the rhinos in their natural habitat.

Beyond rhinos, the 70-square-kilometer sanctuary is a haven for biodiversity, hosting over 300 bird species, 40 mammal species, and a variety of reptiles.

Activities like birding tours, canoe rides, and nature walks make Ziwa a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers alike.

The sanctuary also supports the local economy by providing jobs for rangers, guides, and businesses like lodges and restaurants, while offering resources like grazing land and water to nearby communities.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has become a symbol of hope and resilience for Uganda’s conservation efforts. After rhinos were driven to extinction in the country during the 1970s and 1980s due to poaching and conflict, the sanctuary’s success in reintroducing and protecting rhinos has been a point of national pride.

Each rhino is carefully monitored, and their growing numbers reflect the dedication of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Rhino Fund Uganda, and the local community.

Tourism at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary continues to thrive, with visitors enjoying a range of experiences, from spotting shoebill storks on canoe rides to staying at accommodations like Amuka Safari Lodge, which offers comfortable lodging and delicious meals.

The sanctuary’s proximity to Murchison Falls National Park also makes it an ideal stop for travelers exploring Uganda’s rich wildlife.

Uganda Wildlife Authority’s quick action to address the false closure claims indicates its dedication to maintaining trust with the public and protecting Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary’s mission.

By urging people to verify information through official channels, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is working to ensure that misinformation does not overshadow the sanctuary’s achievements or deter visitors from experiencing its wonders.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary remains a vibrant destination for anyone eager to connect with nature and support conservation.

The chance to walk alongside rhinos and explore the sanctuary’s diverse ecosystem is an unforgettable experience. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) invites everyone to visit Ziwa, support its mission, and share the story of Uganda’s thriving rhinos.
