Gulu City in Northern Uganda Sets to host the 2025 Oktoberfest

Gulu City, the vibrant heart of Northern Uganda, is gearing up for an exciting milestone; its first-ever Oktoberfest, set to take place from 6th – 14th October, 2025.

This cultural extravaganza promises to blend the lively spirit of German tradition with the rich heritage of the Acholi people, creating a unique festival that’s expected to draw over 30,000 visitors, including 600 from Germany.

With a fusion of music, dance, cuisine, and community pride, Gulu’s Oktoberfest is poised to open a new chapter for tourism in the region, showcasing the city’s resilience, culture, and hospitality to the world.

The Gulu City Oktoberfest is a celebration of unity and cultural exchange. Inspired by Mayor Alfred Okwonga’s visit to Munich’s iconic Oktoberfest in 2024, this event aims to weave together German and Acholi traditions in a vibrant tapestry. The festival will also feature traditional Acholi dances, such as the graceful Bwola, a royal dance, and Dingi Dingi, inspired by the movements of antelopes and crested cranes. Live music, storytelling sessions, and artisan markets will fill the air with energy, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the Acholi way of life.

Organized by the Gulu City Council, the Rotary Club of Gulu City, and German partners, the festival is designed to foster pride in Acholi heritage while introducing global visitors to Northern Uganda’s cultural riches.

Walter Okidi Ladwar, President of the Rotary Club and chairperson of the local organizing committee, emphasized the seamless blend of these traditions, noting that the event will unite artists, food vendors, brewers, and businesspeople from Uganda and beyond.

The festival’s launch at Bomah Hotel in Gulu City highlighted its goal of creating a platform for cultural celebration and economic growth.

Oktoberfest 2025 is set to be a game-changer for Gulu’s tourism industry, which is already on the rise. Gulu, the commercial and administrative hub of the Acholi sub-region, is known for its proximity to stunning attractions like Murchison Falls National Park and its vibrant cultural heritage.

The festival is expected to spotlight these assets, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the event itself. A dedicated tourism day, organized with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, will showcase the region’s wildlife and natural beauty, inviting travelers to discover Northern Uganda’s safari opportunities and historical sites.

The economic impact will be felt across the hospitality sector. Hotels like Acholi Inn, Bomah Hotel, and Golden Peace Hotel are preparing for a surge in bookings, with accommodations ranging from mid-range to budget-friendly lodges filling up quickly.

Local restaurants, such as Abyssinia known for Ethiopian cuisine or Northern Pearl which is for Indian flavors, will serve festival-goers eager to taste Gulu’s diverse culinary scene.

Artisans like Kevin Adong, a seller of Acholi relics at Gulu Main Market, are excited about increased sales of crafts, from beaded jewelry to traditional attire, as visitors seek unique souvenirs.

The festival’s proceeds will also support community projects, such as the Acholi scholarship fund, ensuring that the event leaves a lasting positive impact.

Gulu’s Oktoberfest is more than a celebration, it is a testament to the city’s remarkable resilience. Northern Uganda has overcome a turbulent history, including the devastating Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency and the challenges of internally displaced persons camps, which housed nearly two million people until their closure in 2009.

Today, Gulu is a fast-growing, post-conflict city, with improved infrastructure, a thriving economy, and a welcoming spirit. Catherine Lanyero, Gulu’s City Commercial Officer, sees the festival as a chance to redefine the city’s narrative, showing the world that Gulu is a safe, vibrant destination ready to embrace visitors.

The festival also aims to position Gulu as a cultural and economic hub. Mayor Okwonga envisions Oktoberfest as an annual event that will foster partnerships across international, national, and local levels.

By marketing Gulu globally, the organizing team hopes to attract investment and boost cultural infrastructure, preserving heritage sites and empowering local businesses.

The event’s national steering committee, led by Justice Minister Hon. Norbert Mao, is working to ensure its success, with a dedicated website (gulucityoktoberfest.com) already live to share updates and attract sponsors.

From 6th – 14th October, 2025, Gulu City will come alive with a packed schedule of activities. The festival kicks off with a marathon at Kaunda Grounds, inviting participants to run for culture and heritage.

Throughout the week, attendees can enjoy cultural showcases, including traditional dances, music performances, and storytelling that highlight Acholi history.

Food stalls will offer a taste of local specialties, while artisan markets will display handcrafted goods. The event will also feature awards for outstanding performers in cultural categories, encouraging investment in the arts.

With its inclusive vibe, Oktoberfest welcomes Ugandans from all regions and international visitors to celebrate together in a spirit of friendship and unity.
