Uganda Celebrates Rhino Revival – 17 New Calves Await Names in Conservation Milestone

Twenty years after their reintroduction, Uganda’s Southern White Rhino population at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has reached a remarkable 48 individuals, including 17 new calves set to be named in August 2025.

This conservation success story, spearheaded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the #NameARhino campaign, underscores a rare triumph in African wildlife recovery following the species’ extinction in the wild by 1982 due to poaching and armed conflict.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, established in 2005, began with just six rhinos translocated from Kenya and the United States.

Today, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stands as the only place in Uganda where these majestic creatures can be observed in a semi-wild environment.

The recent birth of 17 calves highlights the effectiveness of controlled rhino breeding programs, a strategy supported by genetic studies published in Conservation Biology (2019), which emphasize the role of sanctuaries in bolstering rhino populations for potential future rewilding into national parks.

“This milestone is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to its natural heritage,” said a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) spokesperson. “The growth from six to 48 rhinos, despite historical challenges, shows that with dedication and community support, extinction can be reversed.”

The sanctuary’s success is attributed to rigorous anti-poaching measures and collaboration with private partners like Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch Limited.

The #NameARhino campaign, launched to engage the public, invites Ugandans and global supporters to name the new calves, raising funds and awareness for conservation. Evidence from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) suggests that community involvement can boost species protection success rates by up to 30%, a model Uganda is embracing.

The initiative also ties into tourism, with nearby resorts like Chobe in Murchison Falls National Park promoting rhino viewing as an economic driver.

Social media buzz reflects widespread enthusiasm. Some users have playfully suggested names like “Bentique,” while others hailed the effort as proof that “markets and eco-efforts can align.” The campaign has even tagged high-profile figures like Elon Musk, amplifying its reach.

However, challenges remain. Poaching and habitat loss continue to threaten rhino populations continent-wide, with the Southern White Rhino’s global numbers estimated at 18,000-21,000.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is calling for sustained support, including sponsorships and volunteer efforts, to secure the species’ future.

As rhino naming submissions open in August, Ugandans are urged to participate, leaving a legacy for these gentle giants. For more information, visit the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) website or follow @ugwildlife on X.
