Uganda Wildlife Authority Installs Electric Fence around Murchison Falls National Park

In the heart of Uganda, where the mighty Nile River carves through lush savannas and dense forests, Murchison Falls National Park stands as a testament to Africa’s vibrant biodiversity.

Home to over 70 mammal species and 450 bird species, this iconic park is a sanctuary for elephants, lions, giraffes, and the thunderous Murchison Falls itself, where the river plunges through a narrow gorge with breathtaking force.

Yet, for the communities living on the park’s edges, the beauty of this wilderness has often come with challenges.

Elephants and buffaloes, straying beyond park boundaries, have caused crop destruction and posed risks to human lives, creating a delicate balance between conservation and community well-being.

Now, a transformative initiative by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is paving the way for harmony: an 81-kilometer electric fence designed to foster peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

This ambitious project, spanning the districts of Buliisa, Masindi, Nwoya, and Kiryandongo, marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s conservation journey.

The electric fence, completed in key sections as of August 2025, is more than just a barrier – it is a bridge between human livelihoods and the preservation of one of Africa’s most treasured ecosystems.

Wilson Kagoro, the Warden for Community Conservation at Murchison Falls, shared with Uganda Radio Network that the fence covers 44 kilometers in Nwoya, 22 kilometers in Buliisa, with ongoing work in Masindi and Kiryandongo adding 5 kilometers each.

The goal? To encircle the park’s entire 433-kilometer perimeter, ensuring wildlife stays within the park while communities can farm and live without fear.

The fence is a game-changer for local residents, who have long faced the challenges of human-wildlife conflict.

In villages like Gony Cyoko in Nwoya, stories of elephants trampling maize fields or threatening homes are all too common.

Farmers like Irene Acaa and Esther Akello, who once lost entire harvests to roaming wildlife, now express hope and relief.

Esther, a single mother, told Kazi Njema News that the fence has given her a renewed sense of security, allowing her to focus on farming to support her six children. “It’s never been an easy moment,” she said, recalling sleepless nights worrying about crop losses. “Now, I can concentrate on farming without fear.”

Esther’s optimism reflects a broader sentiment among locals, who see the fence as a lifeline for their livelihoods.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority’s initiative goes beyond physical infrastructure. It is a thoughtful, community-driven effort that prioritizes collaboration.

Before installing each section of the fence, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) engages with local residents to clarify boundaries and address concerns, ensuring the project respects both people and nature.

This approach has fostered trust, with community leaders like John Ben Okot, the Purong Sub-County Chairperson, noting that areas with completed fencing have seen no elephant incursions since installation.

The fence, pulsing with low-voltage electricity, is designed to deter animals safely without causing harm, striking a balance between effectiveness and ethical conservation.

The impact of the fence extends to the park’s wildlife as well. By keeping animals like elephants and buffaloes within Murchison Falls, the fence protects them from retaliatory harm by frustrated farmers, a common outcome of crop raids.

The fence also supports the park’s ambitious recovery efforts, which have seen elephant populations rebound from a mere 200 in 1995 to a healthier number today, thanks to robust anti-poaching measures and community partnerships.

Organizations like Global Conservation and the Uganda Conservation Foundation have bolstered these efforts, removing over 12 tons of snares in 2022 alone and introducing technologies like satellite collars to monitor wildlife movements.

Tourism, a vital economic driver for Uganda, also stands to benefit. Murchison Falls welcomes over 50,000 visitors annually, generating millions in revenue, 20% of which is reinvested into community projects like schools and clinics.

The electric fence enhances the park’s appeal by ensuring safer, more predictable wildlife experiences, making it a more competitive destination in Africa.

Plans to expand the park to include the chimpanzee-rich Budongo Forest Reserve further underscore its growing significance.

While challenges remain, such as securing funds to complete the full 433-kilometer fence and addressing occasional vandalism by suspected poachers, the progress is undeniable.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority’s commitment, backed by partnerships with groups like Space for Giants and the World Bank, signals a bright future.

For farmers, rangers, and conservationists alike, the electric fence is more than a boundary; it’s a symbol of hope, proving that humans and wildlife can thrive side by side.

As the sun sets over Murchison Falls, casting golden hues across the savanna, the hum of the electric fence whispers a promise: a future where Uganda’s wild heart beats in harmony with the communities that surround it.
