Arua City sets to host the 2025 World Tourism Day Celebrations in Uganda

World Tourism Day 2025 Set to be Hosted in Arua City, Uganda

The global celebration of World Tourism Day (WTD) is set to take place in Arua City, Uganda, on September 27th, 2025, under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”

This marks a significant moment for the West Nile region in Uganda, as Arua emerges as a new host for this prestigious international event, organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities (MTWA) of Uganda, in collaboration with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), is gearing up to showcase the region’s untapped potential, aligning with global efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices.

Uganda has previously hosted the World Tourism Day in cities like Kampala (2002, theme: “Ecotourism – The Key to Sustainable Development”) and Entebbe (2010, theme: “Tourism and Biodiversity”).

Globally, notable host cities include Istanbul, Turkey (1997, theme: “Tourism: A Leading Economic Activity”), and Madrid, Spain (2019, theme: “Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All”).

Each year, a different country partners with United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with Uganda stepping up again to highlight its diverse landscapes and cultural heritage.

Why is the World Tourism Day Hosted in Arua City in 2025?

Arua City’s selection reflects its growing infrastructure, including a new airport runway, and its strategic location in West Nile, a region rich in natural beauty and cultural history yet underexplored by tourists.

The 2025 theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” resonates with Arua’s potential to leverage local resources for eco-friendly tourism, supported by a 2022 Vibrant Holiday Safaris report indicating a 20% annual tourism growth in the area.

This choice also aims to decentralize tourism from Uganda’s more famous southern hubs like Kampala and Entebbe, fostering regional development.

Brief Story on Major Towns of West Nile

West Nile, a sub-region west of the Nile River, comprises 13 districts, with Arua City, Adjumani, Koboko, and Nebbi as key towns.

Arua, the commercial hub, has evolved from a colonial outpost to a modern city with new roads and a shopping center, as noted in a 2023 Muzungu Blog Uganda article.

Adjumani, near the South Sudan border, thrives on refugee support and Nile-side charm. Koboko, Idi Amin’s birthplace, blends history with rural tranquility.

Nebbi, near Lake Albert, offers fishing and natural beauty. Together, these towns reflect West Nile’s resilient spirit, shaped by agriculture and recent tourism growth.

Highlight: Nile River

The Nile River, Africa’s longest, courses through West Nile, shaping its landscape and culture.

From Arua, visitors can explore its tributaries for fishing and boating, while nearby Murchison Falls National Park showcases its dramatic power.

The river supports local livelihoods and attracts eco-tourists, with a 2025 MDPI study suggesting sustainable tourism along the Nile could reduce environmental impact by 15% using digital tools.

Flights to and from Arua

Arua Airport connects to Entebbe and Kampala via Uganda Airlines (daily flights, $100 one-way) and charter services.

The new 2024 runway supports larger aircraft, boosting accessibility.

Impact of World Tourism Day on Host Towns

Past World Tourism Day hosts like Kampala saw a 30% tourism revenue increase post-2002, while Entebbe’s 2010 event boosted eco-tourism by 25% (UNWTO data).

Arua could see similar economic gains, infrastructure upgrades, and global visibility, provided sustainability is prioritized.

Strategies for a Successful and Sustainable Event

Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities:

  • Promote Arua through digital campaigns for example AI-driven platforms reducing environmental impact by 15%, per a 2025 MDPI study and train local guides on sustainable practices.

Business Collaboration:

  • Partner with lodges and tour operators to offer eco-friendly packages, using local materials and reducing plastic waste.

Community Engagement:

  • Involve West Nile communities in event planning, ensuring economic benefits trickle down, as seen in Rwanda’s gorilla tourism model.
