Kidepo Valley National Park Unveils Ambitious Electric Fence Project

On October 25th, 2025, Hon. Bahinduka Mugarra Martin, Uganda’s Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, inspected the groundbreaking installation of a 100km solar-powered electric fence at the Lokumoit Ranger Post in Kidepo Valley National Park.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), aims to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts along the park’s boundary, marking a significant milestone in conservation and community safety.

Uniqueness of Kidepo Valley National Park as a Wildlife Safari Destination

Nestled in Uganda’s remote northeastern Karamoja region, Kidepo Valley National Park stands out as a pristine wilderness, covering 1,442 square kilometers of savannah landscapes flanked by rugged mountains.

Unlike more accessible parks, Kidepo offers an untouched safari experience, boasting Africa’s finest buffalo herds alongside rare species like the Rothschild giraffe, cheetah, and the elusive caracal.

Kidepo Valley National  Park’s isolation, over 600km from Kampala, requiring a 12-hour drive, ensures a serene escape, making it a haven for adventurers seeking authentic wildlife encounters.

Wildlife, Birdlife, and Cultural Experiences

Kidepo is a biodiversity hotspot, home to elephants, zebras, lions, and leopards, with the park’s 475 bird species, second only to Queen Elizabeth’s 625, drawing ornithologists worldwide.

The Morungole expedition offers a thrilling hike through varied terrain, revealing stunning valley vistas and encounters with the endangered Ik people, whose unique migration history and dances captivate visitors.

Nearby, the Karamojong, a semi-nomadic tribe, share their traditional lifestyle, from cattle herding to vibrant cultural performances, providing an immersive cultural trail.

History of the Karamoja Region and the Park’s Creation

The Karamoja region’s history traces back to the migration of the Karimojong and related groups, like the Iteso, centuries ago.

British colonial rule in the early 20th century “pacified” the region, establishing control over the Turkana and Karimojong.

Kidepo Valley National Park was gazetted in 1962 to conserve its rich wildlife, but this came at a cost.

Colonial land demarcation, finalized after the 1926 transfer of Rudolf Province to Kenya, arbitrarily sliced through traditional grazing lands, displacing communities and fueling ongoing border disputes with the Teso region.

Unfair Land Demarcation and Its Impact

The colonial boundary, marked by acacia trees and contested aerial lines, ignored the pastoralist lifestyle of the Karimojong and Turkana, confining them to arid zones while fertile lands were reserved for conservation.

This legacy has led to land conflicts, economic hardship, and a sense of marginalization, with the Ik people losing ancestral lands to the park, leaving their population, now UNESCO-classified (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as severely endangered, vulnerable.

Tourism’s Impact on the Karamoja Community

Once shunned due to conflict, Karamoja is now embracing sustainable tourism through initiatives like Kara-Tunga.

By training youth in craft-making and storytelling, and launching the Warrior Nomad Trail, a cross-border peace-building project, tourism creates jobs, preserves cultural heritage, and shifts the region’s negative stigma.

The electric fence project further boosts livelihoods by employing locals, fostering a sense of ownership in conservation efforts.
