This innovative project will allow travelers to walk along an elevated path through the forest canopy, providing a completely new perspective of one of East Africa’s richest ecosystems.

A New Way to Experience the Rainforest

Located in the northern part of the park, the Sebitoli sector lies about 20 kilometers from Fort Portal and is accessible via the Sebitoli Visitor Centre.

Unlike traditional forest walks, the canopy walkway will enable visitors to:

  • Observe primates moving through treetops
  • Spot bird species hidden in the upper forest layers
  • Understand the structure of tropical rainforest ecosystems

This elevated experience offers a bird’s-eye view of the forest, typically reserved for wildlife.

Rich Biodiversity of Kibale National Park

Covering approximately 795 square kilometers, Kibale National Park is one of the most important  tropical forests in East Africa.

The park is famous for its incredible biodiversity, including:

  • 13 primate species, such as chimpanzees, red colobus, and L’Hoest’s monkeys
  • Forest elephants, duikers, and bush pigs
  • Over 370 bird species, making it a top birdwatching destination

Many of these species live in the canopy, making the new walkway a game-changer for wildlife viewing.

Design & Structure of the Canopy Walk

The canopy walkway is carefully designed to blend with nature while minimizing environmental impact.

Key features include:

  • 450-meter-long elevated walkway
  • Approximately 1.4 meters wide
  • A 27-meter-high viewing tower, for panoramic forest views

The structure avoids cutting trees and uses eco-sensitive support systems, ensuring the forest remains largely undisturbed.

Why the Canopy Walk Matters

This project is part of a broader effort to diversify tourism in Kibale National Park, which has long been known for chimpanzee tracking in the Kanyanchu area.

Key benefits:

  • Expands tourism beyond chimpanzee tracking
  • Promotes longer visitor stays in Western Uganda
  • Supports conservation through tourism revenue
  • Creates jobs and opportunities for local communities

The project also strengthens Uganda’s position as a leader in sustainable and experiential tourism.
