Arua City in Uganda’s West Nile region lit up with excitement this past week as tourism leaders, government officials, local cyclists, and community representatives gathered for the official launch of Race the Nile Uganda Ultra 2026.
This groundbreaking event marks the first self-supported gravel ultra-endurance cycling race through one of Africa’s least-explored frontiers.
From 23rd to 27th November 2026, up to 50 riders will tackle approximately 800-900 km of demanding terrain, with significant elevation gain and only about 3% paved roads.
The route starts and finishes in Arua, located in the Northern Uganda region, weaving along the Nile, through the Alur Highlands, remote savannahs, river valleys, and borderlands near the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
Participants will experience breathtaking Nile landscapes, living cultures of the Alur, Lugbara, Kakwa, Madi and other communities, and opportunities for wildlife encounters in areas linked to the Murchison Falls National Park ecosystem and Ajai Wildlife Reserve, home to Uganda’s ongoing white rhino reintroduction efforts.
What sets Race the Nile apart is its dual purpose, the race is both a fierce test of endurance, navigation and heat management (temperatures can exceed 38°C) and a long-term investment in destination positioning, local businesses and community pride.
Race the Nile also carries a powerful conservation message. The overall winner earns the unique honour of naming a newly reintroduced white rhino, linking every kilometre ridden to the revival of a species that disappeared from the region decades ago.
Tourism and conservation expert Lilly Ajarova, who attended and spoke at the launch, highlighted West Nile’s untapped potential, “West Nile has always had the assets to compete on the global tourism stage, breathtaking Nile landscapes, rich culture and heritage and warm, resilient communities. What has been missing is a platform to bring it all together. That is exactly what Race the Nile seeks to achieve.”
Supported by the Government of Uganda, Uganda Tourism Board, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Arua City Council, the West Nile Cyclists Club and private partners, the event aims to put this beautiful but under-visited region firmly on the international adventure tourism map.

The race is fully self-supported, riders rely on their own navigation (GPX files provided), GPS tracking, and local resources, making it a true expedition-style challenge rather than a conventional stage race.
