Ugandan Culinary Star Terran Lugobe Wins WorldSkills Medal of Excellence | A Boost for Responsible Hospitality Training

Ugandan culinary talent has shone on the global stage. Paul Terran Lugobe, a student at the Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC) in Jinja City, has been awarded a Medal of Excellence in Culinary Arts at the 48th WorldSkills Competition held in Shanghai, China, from 22nd to 27th September 2026.

The Medal of Excellence recognises competitors who reach an internationally recognised world-class standard in their skill.

Lugobe competed against more than 1,400 young professionals from nearly 70 countries and regions across 64 skill categories. His achievement places Uganda firmly on the map for high-quality hospitality training.

Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC) in Jinja City has highlighted that Lugobe’s success reflects years of investment by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank in modern training infrastructure, digital learning tools, and instructor capacity development. These upgrades have helped transform the college into a centre of excellence for tourism and hospitality education in Africa.

For travellers and the tourism industry, this news carries real meaning. Strong vocational training produces skilled chefs, service staff, and managers who can deliver authentic, high-quality experiences while supporting local communities and sustainable practices.

When young Ugandans compete and succeed internationally, it raises standards across hotels, restaurants, and lodges that welcome visitors to the Pearl of Africa.

Lugobe’s story also underscores the value of technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

Practical, industry-focused skills open doors to meaningful careers in tourism, one of Uganda’s most important economic sectors, while encouraging responsible practices that protect culture, communities, and the environment.

At Responsible Tourism Company, we celebrate achievements that strengthen Uganda’s hospitality sector.

Skilled local talent is essential for delivering memorable, ethical travel experiences that benefit both visitors and host communities.
