Ankole’s historic Mugaba Palace has officially reopened to the public, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage.
The restoration of this iconic site highlights renewed efforts to protect and promote the traditions of the Banyankole people.

A Landmark Restoration Effort
The reconstruction and rehabilitation of Mugaba Palace were made possible through the support of the Government of Uganda and development partners, implemented under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities alongside the Uganda National Museum and Monuments Department.
The reopening not only restores a key historical site but also strengthens Uganda’s cultural tourism offering.
A Palace Steeped in History
Originally constructed by King Charles Godfrey Gatsyonga II, Mugaba Palace was opened in 1954 and quickly became a symbol of Ankole’s royal heritage.
One of the Mugaba Palace’s most remarkable moments came in 1958, when the palace hosted three monarchs at once, the Omugabe of Ankole, the Omukama of Tooro, and the Kabaka of Buganda, a rare and historic gathering in Uganda’s royal history.

From Ruins to Revival
Following the abolition of kingdoms under the 1967 Republican Constitution, the palace fell into disrepair and remained in ruins for decades.
Mugaba Palace’s restoration represents not just physical rebuilding, but also the revival of cultural identity and pride.
Today, the palace serves as a secure and fitting space to preserve both tangible and intangible heritage, including traditions, artifacts, and stories of the Banyankole people.
Celebrating Ankole’s Living Heritage
While the Ankole Kingdom as a political institution no longer exists, its cultural legacy remains vibrant.
The customs, beliefs, and practices of the Banyankole continue to play an important role in Uganda’s diverse cultural landscape.
The reopening of Mugaba Palace ensures that future generations can experience and learn about this rich heritage.

A New Cultural Tourism Attraction
Mugaba Palace is now set to become a key attraction in western Uganda, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the region’s history and traditions.
Travelers can combine a visit to the palace with exciting park tours from Kampala or Entebbe, including:
- Lake Mburo National Park: Ideal for short safaris, walking tours, and wildlife viewing
- Queen Elizabeth National Park: Famous for tree-climbing lions and boat cruises
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park : Home to mountain gorilla trekking experiences
- Kibale National Park: Renowned for chimpanzee tracking
These destinations provide a perfect mix of culture, wildlife, and adventure.
