The anticipation is building for the second annual Gulu City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at Kaunda Grounds, Gulu City, Uganda.
Launched with fanfare on June 16th, 2025, by Omoro Member of Parliament Hon. Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, this vibrant sport event promises to blend athletic prowess with a deep celebration of Acholi culture and heritage under the theme “Running for Culture and Heritage.”
Gulu City marathon offers four race categories which are 42km full marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km, and a 5km fun run, ensuring everyone from elite athletes to families can join in.

Organized by the Great North Run Company and operated with a commitment to responsible tourism by Loremi Tours, a leading Ugandan tour operator based in Gulu City, the marathon is poised to be a highlight of the year.
The marathon will feature a scenic route through Gulu’s iconic War Memorial and bustling Main Market, offering runners and spectators a chance to engage with the city’s rich history and resilient spirit.
Following the scars of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, which displaced over 1.8 million people by 2006, Gulu is reclaiming its cultural identity.
Registration for the Gulu City Marathon, priced at UGX 60,000, includes a branded T-shirt and string bag, with all finishers earning medals to mark their achievement.
A cultural festival the day before, on December 5th, will showcase traditional Acholi music, dance, and storytelling, fostering community pride and attracting over 1,000 runners and enthusiasts.
A standout feature of this year’s marathon is its charitable impact. Ten percent of the proceeds will support the Dero Kwan Bursary Scheme, an initiative that recently awarded scholarships to 59 students in February 2025.

This effort, championed by local entrepreneur Amos Wekesa whose journey from a $200 startup in 2001 to founding Great Lakes Safaris exemplifies community-driven success, underscores the event’s commitment to education in Northern Uganda.
