Uganda continues to enhance its eco-tourism offerings with the launch of the Kibale Canopy Walk in the Sebitoli sector of Kibale National Park.

This exciting new attraction gives visitors a unique bird’s-eye view of the rainforest, allowing them to experience the upper canopy layer instead of only the forest floor.
Located in the northern part of Kibale National Park, the Sebitoli tourism zone lies about 20 kilometres from Fort Portal. Visitors can access the canopy walkway through the Sebitoli Visitor Centre.
The area was opened to tourism in the early 2000s to ease pressure on the popular Kanyanchu chimpanzee tracking sector.
Experience the Rainforest from Above
The Kibale Canopy Walk features a 450-metre elevated walkway, approximately 1.4 metres wide, winding through the forest canopy.
A highlight is the 27-metre-high viewing tower that rises above the trees, offering panoramic views of the rainforest structure and excellent opportunities for wildlife observation.
The walkway has been thoughtfully designed to minimise impact on the environment. It avoids tree cutting and uses support systems that blend with the natural forest.

This elevated perspective makes it easier to observe primates moving through the trees, colourful birds, and the layered vegetation of the tropical forest.
Rich Biodiversity of Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park is one of East Africa’s most important tropical forests, covering approximately 795 square kilometres.
The park is famous for its impressive primate population, with 13 species recorded, including chimpanzees, red colobus, black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and vervet monkeys.
While chimpanzee tracking is not available in Sebitoli, the area excels in guided nature walks, primate viewing (especially black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys), bird watching, and forest exploration.
Kibale National Park also hosts forest elephants, duikers, bush pigs, and over 370 bird species.
Why the Canopy Walk Matters
The new Kibale Canopy Walk is part of a strategy to diversify tourism activities beyond chimpanzee tracking.
This canopy will appeal to visitors interested in forest exploration, photography, and bird watching, encouraging longer stays in the region.

Beyond visitor experiences, the project supports conservation funding and brings economic benefits to local communities through employment and tourism-related businesses.
The project also promotes sustainable tourism while protecting this vital forest habitat.
