Mbarara City Marathon Cancelled Amid Safety and Compliance Concerns

The much-anticipated Mbarara City Marathon has been officially cancelled, with organizers citing a combination of safety concerns, regulatory directives, and unforeseen environmental conditions that made it impossible to proceed.

In a statement released to runners, partners, sponsors, media, and the public, the organizing team expressed deep regret over the disruption, acknowledging the disappointment experienced by participants who had trained, traveled, and invested in the event.

Why the Mbarara City Marathon Was Cancelled

According to the organizers, the decision was not taken lightly. Several key factors contributed to the cancellation:

  • Regulatory compliance issues raised by relevant authorities
  • Safety concerns affecting athlete wellbeing
  • Environmental disruptions impacting event infrastructure
  • Operational challenges due to last-minute changes

Despite months of planning and coordination, organizers noted that the abrupt communication of changes within a short timeframe made it difficult to maintain the standards required for a national marathon.

Impact on Runners and Stakeholders

The cancellation affected a wide range of participants, including international runners from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United Kingdom.

Organizers acknowledged the frustration and inconvenience caused, especially for athletes who had committed significant time and resources in preparation for the race.

“Your passion and belief in the Mbarara City Marathon are deeply valued, and we do not take that for granted,” the statement emphasized.

Commitment to Safety and Future Improvements

The organizing team reiterated that participant safety remains their top priority. Even with attempts to proceed, conditions did not meet the required standards for a safe and controlled race environment.

Moving forward, organizers are:

  • Engaging with regulatory authorities
  • Addressing compliance gaps
  • Strengthening operational frameworks
  • Improving coordination with stakeholders

This experience is being treated as a learning opportunity to deliver a better, safer, and more organized marathon in the future.
