New Karuma Bridge to Transform Travel & Tourism in Northern Uganda | Construction Starts October 2026

Exciting news for travelers exploring Uganda! On 10th July 2026, the Government of Uganda signed a major contract in Tokyo for the construction of the New Karuma Bridge.

This vital project will replace the aging 1963 structure over the Victoria Nile and significantly improve road travel along the Kampala-Gulu highway.

The agreement was signed by Eng. Isaac Wani, Commissioner for National Roads, and Mr. Osamu Tanabe of Japan’s Zenitaka Corporation. The signing of the contract was witnessed by Uganda’s Solicitor General and the Ambassador to Japan.

Financed through Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) via JICA (approximately ¥4.939 billion / USD 32.7 million), the new bridge will be built by Zenitaka, the same company that delivered the New Jinja Nile Bridge.
