Organizers of the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon have announced major international media partnerships that promise to shine a global spotlight on Uganda’s tourism in 2026.
The August 22nd event, a World Athletics Label Road Race, will cross the Equator against the dramatic backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains, offering runners and spectators one of Africa’s most breathtaking marathon experiences.

World-Class Media Coverage for Uganda
World Athletics will live stream the Rwenzori Marathon 2026, placing it alongside major global events like the London and New York Marathons. Millions of viewers worldwide will get to experience Uganda’s beauty in real time.
BBC is sending a dedicated TV and radio crew that will arrive a week before race day to produce an in-depth feature story.
Additionally, renowned commentator Rob Walker, a passionate supporter of Uganda who has previously run the half-marathon, has committed to free commentary alongside Martin Keino and local voice Andrew Kabuura. Discussions are also underway with two African broadcasters for wider continental reach.
A Missed Opportunity and Lessons Learned
While celebrations are high, organizer Amos Wekesa, a leading Uganda tourism promoter and leader of the Rwenzori Marathon team, noted one setback.
An agreement with Dream Team TV, known for covering top global marathons and potentially reaching 500 million to 1 billion viewers, fell through due to information mismanagement and timing conflicts with a health alert. The team hopes to secure even stronger partnerships next year.
Despite this, the momentum is undeniable. The Rwenzori Marathon has grown rapidly, attracting thousands of runners including a significant international contingent, and is driving tourism to the Rwenzori region.
Regional Excitement and Community Spirit
Recent activation runs highlight growing interest across East Africa. Kenyan runners are already gearing up to participate, while Ugandan participants proudly waved the national flag at events tied to the Kilimanjaro International Marathon.

Activation activities, including runs in Mombasa, showcase the vibrant community building around the race.
Combine Your Marathon Trip with Uganda’s Iconic Park Tours
For travelers looking to make the most of their visit, pair race participation or spectating with unforgettable park tours from Kampala or Entebbe.
Explore Queen Elizabeth National Park for wildlife safaris, trek the mist-covered Rwenzori Mountains, or enjoy chimpanzee tracking and boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel. These extensions turn a sporting event into a complete Uganda adventure.
