Standard Chartered Uganda has pledged UGX 150,000,000 (approximately USD 40,000) to the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon 2025, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s sports tourism development.
The cheque was handed over by the bank’s CEO, Mr. Sanjay Rughani, during a ceremony in Kasese on August 5th, reflecting the bank’s 113-year commitment to community growth.
This sponsorship aligns with global health insights, such as the 2019 Lancet study showing a 20-30% reduction in all-cause mortality through physical activity, positioning the marathon as a health and tourism game-changer.
Located in Kasese at the base of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage-listed Rwenzori Mountains, the marathon’s equatorial crossing offers a unique draw for athletes and adventurers.

This initiative echoes broader visions of Uganda’s potential. With the event set to elevate Uganda’s global tourism profile, it promises economic and cultural benefits for Western Uganda.

Why Uganda Wildlife Safari Parks and Mountain Parks Are Key to Uganda Tourism
Uganda’s 10 national parks, including Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Rwenzori Mountains, are biodiversity havens, hosting 50% of Africa’s bird species (1,073) and half the world’s mountain gorillas.
These parks drive eco-tourism, contributing 20% of park revenue to local communities for schools and infrastructure (Uganda Wildlife Authority, 2022).
The Rwenzori Mountains, dubbed the “Mountains of the Moon,” attract mountaineers and hikers, while parks like Bwindi and Kibale offer primate trekking, boosting Uganda’s $1.52 billion tourism economy.
Their conservation efforts, supported by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Non-Governmental Organizations, enhance global biodiversity and cultural exchange, making them indispensable to sustainable tourism growth.
Is UGX 150M Worth the Event’s Impact?
The UGX 150M investment, covering prizes, marketing, and logistics, is a strategic move with a potential 3:1 return through participant spending, media exposure, and sustained tourism growth.
The event’s cultural and health benefits like enhancing Uganda’s image as an active destination, add intangible value, with break-even likely within two years if participation scales as expected.

History of the Rwenzururu Kingdom
The Rwenzururu Kingdom emerged in 1962 when the Bakonjo and Bamba ethnic groups in western Uganda sought autonomy from the Toro Kingdom, citing marginalization.
Led by Isaya Mukirane, the movement declared independence, sparking a guerrilla war until 1982. In 2009, the Ugandan government recognized Charles Mumbere as Omusinga, granting cultural autonomy.
The 2016 clash with security forces, killing over 100 (Human Rights Watch, 2020), highlighted tensions, but the marathon’s economic focus aims to heal divisions, blending heritage with modern tourism.
