Uganda has got an addition to the wild rhinos in the country after a male calf was born at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola.

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the calf was born by Kori, one of the oldest female Rhinos at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is the state run Ugandan government organisation responsible for conservation, management and regulation of Uganda’s wildlife.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (said in a statement Sunday (July 25), “Good news from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Kori, one of the oldest female Rhinos has given birth to a male calf.”

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch located in Nakasongola, north of Kampala, Uganda’s capital is among the most popular day trip destinations from Kampala.

Ziwa is the ONLY place in Uganda where rhinos can be seen roaming the wild

The sanctuary is a ‘must visit’ location for expatriates and foreign tourists coming to Uganda, and is included on literally all safari itineraries going to or coming from Murchison Falls National Park​.

The sanctuary has become increasingly popular with tourists; for Rhino tracking or on-foot rhino tracking, Shoebill trek and canoe ride, bird watching, night walk, nature walk and relaxation.

Ziwa is around 3-4 hours 176km (100 miles from Kampala and exiting Kampala can take an hour depending on where your Hotel is.

The visit to the Rhinos will take 2 hours (or it is not worth going). From Ziwa it is about two hours to the top of the falls.

The sanctuary, which previously had 32 southern white rhinos, now has 33 after the birth of a male calf.

Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranches (WRWR) reopened the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to the public and resumed tourism activities at the rhino sanctuary on Thursday 10th June, 2021.

Ziwa rhino sanctuary was reopened to tourist after a management dispute between sanctuary land owner and rhino breeding programme organisation, leaving to the only rhino refugee in Uganda closure 20th of April, 2021.
