Uganda Tourism Board Elevates Eastern Uganda with Strategic Retreat at Sipi Falls

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) recently wrapped up a transformative retreat in Eastern Uganda spotlighting the region’s tourism potential with a focus on Sipi Falls.

Held in Kapchorwa, the retreat brought together the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Board of Directors and Management to foster internal collaboration, engage local stakeholders, and position Eastern Uganda as a premier tourism destination.

Spotlight on Sipi Falls and Adventure Tourism

The retreat featured a visit to the stunning Sipi Falls, a series of three waterfalls cascading down Mount Elgon’s slopes, located 277 km from Kampala.

The team explored opportunities to enhance hiking tours and mountain trails, with Sipi Falls offering trails ranging from gentle walks to challenging ascents with panoramic views.

Local tourism players highlighted the potential for sustainable adventure tourism, aligning with the region’s growing reputation as a hiking hotspot.

The nearby Mount Elgon National Park, with its Wagagai Trail peaking at 4,321m, further promises thrilling mountain trails for intrepid explorers.

Eastern Uganda Safari Tour and Cultural Immersion

Beyond adventure, the retreat emphasized the appeal of an Eastern Uganda Safari Tour, blending wildlife and cultural experiences.

A courtesy visit to the Bamasaba Cultural Institution, led by Umukuka Jude Mudoma, showcased the role of cultural heritage in tourism development.

Discussions focused on preserving traditions while integrating them into tourism offerings, complementing safari itineraries that could include Mount Elgon’s biodiversity.

For a comprehensive experience, Uganda Safari Holiday Packages offer gorilla trekking and game safaris, with group discounts available.

Accommodation and Local Exploration

Visitors to the region can choose from a range of accommodations, including Sipi Falls Hotels like Sipi Valley Resort, offering proximity to the falls, and Kapchorwa Hotels providing a base for trail explorations.

For those venturing into nearby Mbale, Mbale Hotels such as Caldera House offer comfort just a short walk from attractions.

The retreat also spurred interest in a Mbale City Tour, with operators like Mbale Tours (Eyalama Adventures Ltd) promoting unique Mbale Experiences such as bull fighting, the Imbalu ceremony, and coffee tours, enriching the cultural landscape.

Commitment to Inclusive Growth

The retreat reinforced Uganda Tourism Board’s pledge to inclusive tourism through public-private partnerships, a strategy that could boost local employment by up to 30% (United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), 2013).

Engagements with grassroots communities and plans for sustainable infrastructure aim to elevate Eastern Uganda’s tourism profile, building on the region’s contribution to Uganda’s GDP from tourism, which stood at USh 4.9 trillion in 2012-2013.
