The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Uganda state-run destination marketing agency has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting Jinja tourism and the country’s tourism sector with a recent visit to the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) in Jinja.
The Jinja visit, conducted on July 29, 2025 by team from Uganda Tourism Board, aimed to evaluate the hospitality training standards and foster partnerships to enhance workforce skills for Jinja tours and beyond.
Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) led by Principal Richard Kawere, showcased its revamped facilities, upgraded since 2018 with a $7 million World Bank loan.
The renovation, which increased the institute’s hotel rooms to 50, aligns its programs with global standards, building on its 1989 origins as an ILO-UNDP pilot.
The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) praised the progress and pledged support, including job placement initiatives for graduates, as the tourism sector, contributing 7.7% to GDP (World Bank, 2023), seeks to recover and grow.
The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) delegation also inspected ongoing developments at the Source of the Nile River in Jinja, a historic site identified by John Hanning Speke in 1862.
These attraction upgrades enhance Source of the Nile Adventure Tours from Kampala, boosting East Africa Adventure and Uganda Safari appeal.
The Eastern Uganda Region Safari, leveraging the Nile’s 6,650-kilometer legacy, saw 12% annual growth pre-COVID (UNWTO, 2019).
As Uganda targets a 25-fold tourism expansion by 2030 under the National Development Plan IV, this collaboration signals a promising step forward.
