Uganda Makes Golf History: First Official World Golf Ranking Tournament Success at Pearl of Africa Golf Series 2026

Uganda has achieved a significant milestone in its sporting and tourism ambitions by successfully hosting the second edition of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series from 16th to 19th September 2026 at Entebbe Golf Club.

The event marked the country’s first professional golf tournament recognised by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), offering world-ranking points to competitors and elevating Uganda’s standing on the international golf calendar.

Organised with the support of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the golf tournament formed part of the Sunshine Development Tour’s East Africa Swing and attracted a strong international field of professional and elite amateur golfers from across Africa and beyond, including players from South Africa, Nigeria, Malawi, England, Kenya and Zambia.

More than 20 South African golfers alone travelled to Uganda for the competition, underscoring the growing appeal of the destination for sports tourism.

Local professional Ronald Rugumayo delivered a commanding performance to claim the title. The Fort Portal City native and reigning Uganda Open champion posted rounds of 67, 64 and 69 for a total of 13-under-par 200, finishing four strokes clear of the field.

Malawi’s Paul Adams (also reported as Paul Adam Chidale) and Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko shared second place on 9-under 204. England’s Matt Millar and South Africa’s Slade Pickering finished tied for fourth on 8-under 205.

Rugumayo’s victory continued an exceptional run of form that has seen him dominate the Ugandan professional circuit in recent months.

Speaking after the final round, he highlighted the special nature of winning on home soil in front of supportive local galleries.

The Pearl of Africa Golf Series event carried a prize fund of approximately $20,000, with the winner taking the largest share, and also offered Order of Merit points on the Sunshine Development Tour pathway.

A Boost for Sports Tourism and National Visibility

Beyond the competitive drama on the course, the Pearl of Africa Golf Series delivered clear benefits for Uganda’s tourism sector.

The Uganda Tourism Board emphasised that the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition strengthens the country’s visibility on the international golf calendar and creates new opportunities for sports tourism.

Hosting high-calibre events helps attract visitors who combine golf with wildlife safaris, cultural experiences and other adventures unique to the “Pearl of Africa.”

Entebbe Golf Club, with its attractive lakeside setting near Lake Victoria, provided an appealing venue that showcased Uganda’s natural beauty alongside competitive golfing facilities.

The influx of international players and accompanying visitors supported local hospitality businesses, restaurants and service providers in Uganda, demonstrating the economic ripple effects of well-organised sporting events.

The second edition of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series built on the foundation of the inaugural event and signalled Uganda’s ambition to develop a stronger professional golf ecosystem.

By offering ranking points and attracting regional talent, the golf tournament gave Ugandan players valuable competitive experience while positioning the country as an emerging destination for African golf development pathways linked to the Sunshine Tour.

Looking Ahead: Golf Meets Responsible Exploration

As Uganda continues to diversify its tourism offerings, sports tourism is emerging as a promising growth area.

Visitors can now look forward to combining rounds at quality courses such as Entebbe Golf Club with world-renowned experiences including mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorillla National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, game drives in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, and cultural encounters across the country.

The successful staging of Uganda’s first Official World Golf Ranking -recognised tournament sends a clear message: the country is ready to welcome international sports enthusiasts and leisure travellers alike.
