The Vital Role of Fund Distribution in Uganda’s Conservation Success

In a significant move for sustainable conservation, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) disbursed UGX 2.17 billion (approximately $580,000 USD) to communities neighboring the Bwindi-Mgahinga Conservation Area on June 19th, 2025.

The funds, generated from gorilla tourism revenue, are earmarked to support schools, health centers, water access, and local livelihoods in the districts of Kanungu, Kisoro, and Rubanda.

This initiative, presided over by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. James Kalema at the Buhoma Visitor Information Centre, underscores a growing model where community welfare directly fuels wildlife preservation.

Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas (with numbers rising from 880 to 1,063 over the past decade, per a 2023 IUCN report), thrives due to this innovative approach.

Research from the Journal of Sustainable Tourism (2014) highlights that community involvement in conservation can boost success rates by up to 30%, while a 2022 Conservation Biology study notes a 15% increase in gorilla population stability since such funding began.

This distribution challenges the traditional narrative of conflict between conservation and local needs, turning tourism into a lifeline for both people and wildlife.

The allocated funds, UGX 1.17 billion to Kanungu, UGX 636 million to Kisoro, and UGX 386 million to Rubanda, demonstrate a targeted effort to enhance infrastructure and livelihoods, fostering a symbiotic relationship between humans and nature.

However, some community voices, as seen on social media, call for urgent attention to road infrastructure, suggesting that equitable fund allocation remains a work in progress.

Experts argue that effective fund distribution is the backbone of sustainable tourism. “When communities thrive, conservation thrives,” said Prof. Kalema, echoing a sentiment supported by the World Bank’s ongoing Competitiveness and Enterprise Development Project, which emphasizes tourism’s role in job creation and economic transformation in Uganda.

As the country eyes expanding its tourism offerings beyond gorilla trekking, exploring cultural, culinary, and agro-tourism, transparent and impactful fund distribution will be key to long-term success.
