Mount Sabinyo in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Kisoro, Uganda has reopened to hikers with newly installed ladders and rehabilitated trails, connecting its three peaks to Mounts Gahinga and Muhabura.
Announced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) with support from the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration and World Bank-funded IFPA-CD initiative, this $500,000 project aims to boost safety and diversify eco-tourism in a region critical for mountain gorilla conservation.
Hikers can now explore breathtaking landscapes above Uganda’s Mount Sabinyo clouds, with the first guided treks set to launch next week.
The rehabilitation of Mount Sabinyo ladders replaced aging, handmade ladders with sturdy, weather-resistant structures across Sabinyo’s steep ridges, a move informed by a 2023 Journal of Mountain Science study showing a 40% reduction in hiker injuries with modern installations.
The Mount Sabinyo ladder project, completed in collaboration with the Greater Virunga initiative, also lays groundwork for a connected trail network spanning the three volcanic peaks, offering a multi-day hiking experience.
Mount Sabinyo, part of the Virunga Massif shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is a haven for endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
A 2021 Conservation Biology study highlighted that eco-tourism in the Virunga region has increased local incomes by 25% while funding anti-poaching and habitat preservation efforts, countering threats from rebel activity in nearby Virunga National Park.
Uganda Wildlife Authority officials anticipate a surge in visitors, with early bookings already up 15% since the announcement.
Local mount hiking guides like Mükalazi Jacob Zuma express excitement, planning to be among the first to summit all three peaks in one day.
The project aligns with global efforts to combat climate change through forest conservation, as outlined in the IFPA-CD framework.
While the ladders enhance safety, maintenance in the misty, high-altitude environment remains a concern.
Uganda Wildlife Authority plans to monitor their condition quarterly, seeking additional funding to ensure longevity.
These new ladders and trails not only make hiking in Mount Sabinyo in Mgahinga safer but also open up a world-class adventure that supports our gorillas and communities.
