On 20th September 2026, hundreds of runners, corporate partners, community leaders, and public officials gathered at the Cricket Oval in Lugogo for the 6th Annual Muslim Run.
The event, organised by the Islamic Chamber of Commerce Uganda, aimed to raise UGX 250 million toward the construction of an administration block at Shukran Babies’ Home in Luweero District.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) participated actively, with Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi leading a team of staff.

Mr. Benon Kigenyi was joined by His Worship the Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo. In a post shared after the event, Kigenyi highlighted the purpose of the run; proceeds will support an administration block for the home that cares for disadvantaged young people in and around Kampala.
Mr. Benon Kigenyi expressed appreciation to corporate sponsors, fellow runners, and the Islamic Chamber of Commerce Uganda for leading the initiative.
“When we support a cause like this, we are not simply putting up a building; we are helping create an environment where vulnerable children can feel protected, valued and hopeful about their future,” Kigenyi stated.
He also praised the collective effort involving faith-based organisations, the private sector, public institutions, and ordinary citizens.
Shukran Babies’ Home (also referred to as Shukran Children’s Home), located in the Wobulenzi area of Luweero District, provides care, support, and a safe environment for abandoned and vulnerable children, particularly those aged zero to three.

The planned administration block will strengthen the home’s operations, including offices, staff facilities, a sick bay, laundry, and children’s play areas, enabling better service delivery.
The annual Muslim Run has grown into a significant community fundraising platform. Previous editions have supported earlier phases of the home’s development, such as dormitories.
Running kits were priced accessibly to encourage broad participation, and the event featured corporate sponsors including well-known brands that helped amplify the cause.
Why This Matters for Responsible Tourism in Uganda
Events like the Annual Muslim Run exemplify the principles of responsible tourism. They demonstrate how local communities, government bodies, faith groups, and businesses collaborate to address social challenges while fostering inclusion and shared purpose.
For travelers exploring Uganda, such initiatives offer insight into authentic community life beyond wildlife safaris and national parks including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Supporting or learning about projects like Shukran Babies’ Home aligns with ethical travel values, respecting local cultures, contributing to community wellbeing, and leaving a positive impact.
Visitors interested in community-based tourism can combine city experiences in Kampala City with visits to nearby districts such as Luweero District, supporting local economies and social enterprises along the way.
The strong turnout at Lugogo, including high-level public participation from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Lord Mayor’s office, underscores Uganda’s growing emphasis on social responsibility as part of its tourism and development narrative.
This shows that hospitality and tourism in Uganda extend beyond leisure into meaningful community engagement.
