Announced by Dr Jimmy Opigo, a leading tourism entrepreneur and conservation advocate in the region, the race will take place from 23rd to 27th November 2026, starting and finishing in Arua.

This groundbreaking event promises to put Uganda’s often-overlooked West Nile on the global map for cycling and responsible travel.

Who Organised the Race the Nile Event?

The organizers of the Race the Nile ultra-cycling challenge represent a unique cross-border collaboration aimed at elevating sports tourism in Uganda’s West Nile region.

The foundational management is shared between Wuza Ltd, a Kampala-based event operations firm acting as the Local Organizing Committee, and PK Tourism Consult GmbH, an Austrian international consultancy spearheaded by Pablo Rodriguez and Klemens Kollenz that handles global branding and participant registration.

The organisers work in close coordination with the technical experts at the Nile Bike Club, alongside visionary local promoter and conservationist Dr. Jimmy Opigo, who officially announced the event.

To deeply integrate the community, the management partners with regional stakeholders like Arra Lodges for hospitality, as well as community programs in Nebbi, such as Dream City and New Generation, to supply handmade jerseys and support local conservation milestones like white rhino reintroduction.

What Makes Race the Nile Unique?

Participants will tackle a mostly off-road, off-grid route that closely follows the mighty Nile River along Uganda’s borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.

The challenging gravel journey crosses the Nile twice using vintage ferries and canoes, passes the foothills of Mount Otce, and winds through diverse landscapes and communities.

A highlight of the route is passage through Ajai Wildlife Game Reserve, home to white rhinos and recently translocated Uganda kobs, offering cyclists a rare opportunity to experience wildlife up close in one of Uganda’s emerging conservation areas.

The race also showcases the rich cultural tapestry of West Nile, including visits near refugee settlements and interactions with local communities, highlighting the region’s resilience and hospitality.
