UCAA Upgrades Jinja Airfield to Paved Runway to Boost Aviation and Tourism

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has successfully upgraded Jinja Airfield, transforming its runway, taxiway and apron from gravel surfaces into a modern paved facility.

Officials say the improvement will significantly boost the aviation industry while enhancing access for tourists and business travellers to eastern Uganda.

The project forms part of the National Civil Aviation Master Plan, an initiative designed to modernise regional aerodromes, improve connectivity and support tourism and trade across the country.

According to Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) Public Affairs Manager Vianney Luggya, the upgrades are expected to enhance safety, reliability and efficiency of operations at Jinja Airfield.

The improved facility will also make air travel to Jinja more convenient for visitors exploring the Source of the Nile, adventure activities and other attractions in the region.

Why Jinja Airfield Matters for Tourism

Jinja City is one of Uganda’s top tourism destinations, famous for the Source of the Nile, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking, cultural experiences and scenic landscapes around Lake Victoria.

Better air connectivity reduces travel time from Entebbe or Kampala Cities and opens new opportunities for domestic and international visitors seeking shorter, more comfortable journeys.

The upgraded airfield is also strategically important for the East African region, which is deliberately improving airports around Lake Victoria to strengthen regional air links.

Beyond tourism and trade, Jinja Airfield supports aviation training through Vine Air Flight Academy and hosts the Uganda Police Force Airwing, which has an Approved Maintenance Organisation for its fleet.

Part of a Wider Aviation Modernisation Drive

The Jinja City upgrade is one of several regional aerodrome improvements under the National Civil Aviation Master Plan.

Other priority airports and airfields being developed include Kidepo, Arua, Gulu, Kasese, Kisoro and Pakuba airfields, all aimed at unlocking tourism potential, facilitating cross-border trade and stimulating socio-economic development.
